Reduce Food Wastage by Sharing Food

The standard of living in Taiwan has increased throughout the years and it seems that precious resources are being wasted unconsciously. Food wastage is a very relevant issue that needs to be addressed, yet it is commonly neglected. The Mustard Seed Mission will continue the spirit of food banks through “Zero food wastage! Establish a network of hunger-free community.” After the relocation of the Southern Service Centre (which is also the transfer station for food banks), multiple community refrigerators have been installed and they have been serving the local communities since 20th May 2019. Other than supporting the food banks in Kaohsiung and Pingtung, these community refrigerators also aim to promote social cohesion as the locals start to look out for the social well-being of one another. This movement will also increase their awareness on conserving the environment as they strive to reduce food wastage as a community.

Making a Difference through Sharing

“Ding dong! Ding dong!” a special delivery arrived at the centre. The package was revealed to be a box of glutinous rice dumplings which was timely since the Dragon Boat Festival was near. The anonymous donor’s only hope was to share this love with the community and to warm the hearts of needy family during this festive season. Various corporate companies have also been very generous in their donations, which included foods such as golden kiwi fruits, onion pancakes and white rice. The community refrigerator has never seen to be empty. We have been blessed to witness the contented faces of the beneficiaries, which includes the church as well as children from more challenging backgrounds. Just a simple “Thank you, aunty!” have made all the hard work worthwhile. Donating food seems may not seem much but it has warmed the hearts and bellies of many.

Sharing is Caring

The Mustard Seed Mission is thankful and grateful towards the very generous donations from various enterprises and members of the community, which have benefited the communities in Kaohsiung and Pingtung. We look forward to more initiatives from the community as we believe that it is important to not waste the unfinished food at home, such as food near expiry, bread as well as frozen items. We hope that more families will be able to kindly share these with those in need through donations in the community refrigerators. At the end of the day, a small donation as such will be able to feed many others. Through these donations, we will be able to be more responsible towards the food producers and will be able to do a part in conserving the environment.

In continuation of the spirit of food banks through “Zero food wastage! Establish a network of hunger-free community”, The Mustard Seed Mission will be installing 10+ community refrigerators. And we hope to instill the good value of sharing in the community.  Let’s cherish the food we have to help conserve our environment!
