This project will finance the construction of three treatment pavilions (gazebos/shaded shelters) for the opening of the first addiction center in French speaking West Africa. Located in Dassa, Benin, 256 people will receive residential treatment for addiction and mental health problems. The pavilions (3 total at $5,000 USD each) will provide a sheltered outdoor common space where residents will gather for discussion groups, art, and other therapeutic and relaxation activities.
Drug and alcohol addiction affects 6% of the mentally ill treated by our African partner, the Association Saint Camille (ASC), a comprehensive mental health program in Benin, Togo, and Ivory Coast. There is no specialized addiction treatment center in French speaking West Africa. People with addiction and mental illness are often rejected in their communities due to a traditional belief that they possess an evil spirit or that the illness is contagious; some are homeless or even chained.
A safe, welcoming therapeutic environment will be provided at the addiction center for 128 men and 128 women from across the region. Demystifying the illness to the family is a key component to learning that their loved one has a treatable illness and what supports are needed to sustain recovery. Nutrition, counseling, and medications, when appropriate, will be provided. Housing units are under construction and the pavilion will provide a gathering space for activities in support of recovery.
There is no safety net for people in the region who are ill and unable to work; all services are provided on a cash pay basis and expensive for many people. ASC is unique in providing comprehensive (residential and outpatient) treatment regardless of ability to pay. Helping 256 adults learn about their addiction and achieve recovery will allow their reunification with families and the opportunity for gainful employment, reducing the risk of future poverty and homelessness.
