Yamile’s her birth mom couldn’t care for her, so Yamile was moved into foster care in Colombia. There, she met Laura, and the two became inseparable, but she still wished for a forever family. Then in 2009, Yamile traveled to the U.S. through Kidsave’s Summer Miracles program, and met Jeff and Lenna, the family that would adopt her.
Now in her twenties and a new mom herself, something has blossomed in her that she had not imagined.
Yamile could never understand why her biological mom gave her up. She felt that her mother could not possibly have loved her and given her up. But when Yamile had her own daughter, she began to understand something about a mother’s love.
“Nothing can prepare you for all those emotions that come,” she says of holding her newborn. “When I was younger and in foster care, I couldn’t understand why my mother stopped visiting. But when I became a mom myself, I understood that my mom wanted a better life for me, and a chance maybe to someday have a family.”
“I understand now that a mother’s love is unconditional; that she is going to do whatever she can to protect her children,” says Yamile. “She wants the best for them -- even if that means giving them up.”
Yamile left behind in Colombia someone very close to her – her best friend, Laura. “I named my American Girl doll after her, so I wouldn’t forget,” says Yamile. So, when Laura’s picture appeared three years later on the Kidsave website as a Kidsave child coming to the US to meet her own forever family, Yamile’s parents, knew these girls needed to be sisters…. and Laura was also adopted by Jeff and Lenna, to Yamile’s complete delight.
A very happy ending…. and a fresh beginning for two girls who just needed someone to see their potential and their undying friendship, and make the decision to love and raise them.
