CHOSA's partners are dreaming big & growing strong

We are immensely proud of each and every community-based project we support. In recent months, they have come together in new, creative ways to serve the children in their care, and we are honored to partner with them.

Here are a few of the latest happenings in Cape Town, which have all been made possible by your generous support!

Dreaming big:

Abaphumeleli Home of Safety recently received the donation of a shipping container (commonly used as small buildings in the communities we serve). Abaph plans to use the container to establish an internet cafe/coffee shop, which would be a sustainable source of income for the Home of Safety.

Molo Mhlaba continues to dream of expanding their vision - access to STEAM-based, Montessori-style education to girls in townships - beyond just one school. They are eagerly awaiting government approval to begin building their second campus in Montclair, on land that they acquired last year.

Growing strong:

Hlumelo Educare, which offers an inclusive environment for both autistic and typically-developing preschoolers, has moved into a brand-new structure! The structure, which was donated by a local nonprofit, is a safer and more open space that is more conducive for children’s activities. Hlumelo has also recently received a donation of all kinds of educational and developmentally appropriate toys to outfit the new space from Shonaquip, a social enterprise that supports children with disabilities.

Two of our projects have launched exciting new programs for their youth! Thembisa Ratanga has added a new mental health program to their after-school youth programming, where students come to practice yoga and meditation. And at Ipupha Lam, budding artists have been enjoying the new arts program and have even begun selling the jewelry they’ve made to generate income for the program. (See photo below!)

Each of these projects receives monthly grants and capacity-building support from CHOSA, which empowers them to continue serving their communities.

One last update:

We are proud to announce that we have expanded our on-ground staff from 4 members to 5! Last year, we said goodbye to longtime staff member Adele Bruggeman, but this year, we have welcomed Chaleen Arendse and Dhane Herbst to the Cape Town team. These two dynamic women have a deep passion for children and community development, and we look forward to seeing how their skills and creativity will expand our work even further.
