Thank you so much for your support, with your donations via GlobalGiving we have been able to feed mothers and babies in Lesvos, Greece.
On 8th September, a fire destroyed Moria camp, where almost 13,000 men, women and children were living. Thankfully, no death or major injuries were reported.
The Greek government has since declared a state of emergency for 4 months. They have built a temporary camp which is now housing 9000 of the former residents. There are around 3800 children in the camp, an estimate that 80% of them are 5 and under. Whilst we are relieved to report that the majority of unaccompanied children who had been living in Moria have been transferred to the mainland, living conditions are difficult in the temporary camp for everyone left behind. There is minimal infrastructure in place, with areas divided with razor wire, no safe quarantine area, and no working showers at the time of writing.
As usual, emergency situations like this are toughest for the most vulnerable. The state food distribution is currently once a day, with a 3.5 hour queue, and huge queues for water. Your funds are helping to ensure mothers, babies and young children are getting the vitamins they need with supplementary fruit, water and baby formula.
Once again, thank you for your generosity in helping refugees and asylum seekers trapped on Lesvos.
