The Food Project delivers fresh fruit, vegetables & dry food to over 5000 refugees stranded in Greece. Through operating in 17 refugee sites and partnering with 15 organisations, each family receives two food packs a week. The project gives malnourished children access to the vital nutrients they need to grow strong and healthy. It allows families to cook for themselves, empowering individuals and upholding dignity. A project that aims to enhance the health and well-being of those fleeing war.
For refugees living in limbo in camps in Greece, state-funded food portions are insufficient to meet the needs of the refugee community. Growing children and pregnant women are forced to go hungry - life as a refugee can be extremely bleak. Communities have few resources and little autonomy over their day-to-day routines. Children are malnourished, have stunted growth, and experience trouble learning. Without the ability to cook their own food, families live without choice or purpose.
By locating local suppliers and fresh markets across Greece, The Food Project buys and distributes food in 17 refugee camps. Engaging with local organisations and speaking to refugee communities living in the camps, individual food needs are quickly and effectively met. Refugees across Greece are distributed 2 food packs catered towards their nutritional needs a week. Children no longer go hungry, and health and nutrition is vastly improved.
The project feeds up to 26,300 refugees a month, the long-term effects of good nutrition will last for generations. Child refugees will grow, learn, and better adjust to their new homes. By creating a sense of purpose for refugees, individuals are at a reduced risk of developing long-term physical and mental health issues associated with the aftermath of trauma and conflict. To prepare one's own food provides stability in times of crisis; building the foundations for a positive future.
