Caring for the poorest of the poor!

By MARGARET L GRAINGER | Vice President

The families we support with our care packages are carefully selected not on based on their needs for physical food. We take a wholistic approach to selecting and caring for families which include their ability to work and earn an income.

For many of the families that we support, the parents have little or no education. In some circumstances they also do not have a birth certificate which means the chances of getting employment that does not include exploitation is almost impossible.

Without the ability to read or write simple jobs such as working in a store, being a waitress or other  simple jobs are not possible. Most of the time these people scavenge for plastic bottles and other recyclable materials in bins. With no form of transport, they cannot go far from their houses and are limited in what they can carry. This limits their search area and ability to find enough items to survive.

Another typical job is being a laborer on a construction site. The basic minimum waste is $9 USD a day, however those with no education and ID papers are often  paid less than $4 a day. This is simply not enough money to survive on.

In addition to this is there is a severely disabled adult or child, this means that on more person cannot work. A single mum with a disabled child cannot leave the child and cannot work. This creates a desperate situation. Each week when we visit families to deliver food we also spend time ensuring that the family is OK.

Thank you for all your support. Every cent makes a difference.
