Update: The JOY Home Day Center for Special Needs Orphans

By Jen Naskov | Executive Director

Tater and Chicken
Tater and Chicken

This year we experienced a sweltering summer in Macedonia.  We are so thankful that Fall is finally here - there is a crispness in the air, the leaves are changing in the city park, and everywhere you go the smell of ajvar (traditional pepper spread) is just around the corner.

We have been hard at work, at The JOY Home.  Aleks Naskov has taken over as the Groundskeeper, and spends approximately 25 hours a week, working on the huge yard (right at 1 acre between the three properties), digging out unsafe plants, doing upkeep on the home, and cutting the grass.  He also takes care of the two therapy dogs, Chicken and Tater, who live at The JOY Home.

Last month, he dug out all of the giant rosebushes (each one was well over 6 feet tall) that lined the property, close to the front door. Although beautiful, the thorns were massive and definitely not safe for little hands. He also removed several toxic plants/bushes that were near the house.  Because the home was empty for 10+ years, the amount of overgrowth is staggering. We are so grateful for Aleks and his hard work. The yard is looking beautiful and much, much safer!

This month we received a donation that helped us purchase 100 bags of pellets that should last us through the winter months. This will be our first full winter using the pellet heater, and we are looking forward to the toasty warm rooms!  Last month, when we tried out the pellet heater, we quickly realized that we lose a lot of heat up the stairwell. So, another important item that we are using the recent donation for is to have a door installed at the end of the hallway, that will keep the warmth in the bottom floor - giving us to turn off the radiators on the top floor when it isn't in use. We are so grateful for that awesome gift that will keep the kids warm through the cold winter months!

We spoke to a representative from the Licensing Commission last week, regarding our Day Center License.  We were told that the license has officially been approved and is awaiting a signature from the Minister; however, due to anti-corruption laws in Macedonia, the license cannot be signed until after the local elections (and potential run-offs) are over. The election will take place on October 17th and any possible run-offs will be held on October 31st. So, the license should be signed very soon!

We are completely ready to open The JOY Home Day Center for special needs orphans. Last week, we met with the physical therapist that will be working with us at the center. We made plans, walked through the home and discussed the schedule and which room he’ll be using, and dreamed about the future - the children we will work with, the equipment we will need, and the fun we will have. We can’t wait!

Once again, THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts! We are so grateful for your gifts and encouragement. You are making a difference in the lives of special needs orphans in Macedonia!
