Our First Field Trip!

By Rachel Isser | Project Leader

Seventh graders observe termites nest!
Seventh graders observe termites nest!

On June 22, we went on our first field trip with the seventh graders at Los Algarrobos School! The families were so excited to spend a day together outside of school!

The day began at 8:00 on a Saturday when we all met at school to get into three vans that would take us around the region to our varios destinations. Our first stop was to the Cerro Seco Nature Reserve. Here the students went on an hour long nature walk in virgin dry tropical rain forest. Led by project leader Michaela Maissen, the students and parents saw local habitat in its most wild form. They were particularly impressed with the enormous Ceibo trees and a huge termite's nest!

After a well earned snack, the families got back in the vans to head over to the second destination: The worksite for the Planet Drum Foundation. Here, project leader Clay Plager-Unger led students and parents in a discussion about environmental responsibility and what role planting trees has in protecting the planet. After, the students split into two groups to transplant baby trees from a nursery into individual recycled plastic bottles to be planted in the ground at a later date. We hope to plant trees from our own nursery at school during a field trip later in the school year!

After a warm farewell with Clay, the group headed back to the vans to return to school. Parents and students were all very happy with the trip and prepared to do reflection on what they experienced in science class.

Help keep this environmental project alive! The countdown to the July 18th Bonus Day is on! This bonus day is all about matching BIG gifts. Starting at 9:00 a.m. ET on Thursday, July 18, GlobalGiving is putting up $130K in matching funds for donations of $100 and above. The higher the donation, the higher the match!

The next activity in our environmental education program will be a beach clean-up involving the whole school! The class that shows up with the greatest percent of participation will celebrate with a pizza party! Stay tuned!
