Only Good news from the Osa Peninsula!

By Helena Pita | Program Director

The forest is recovering, the animals are returning, more farmers and ranchers implementing good practices.

Since 2021, we begun the mission to recover 4 hectares of forest that had been converted into a degraded pasture, causing a loss of wildlife.

We are very excited to tell you that this June, we have completed the last stage of active reforestation, with 896 native trees planted this month. It was done in a single day with the support of 48 volunteers!

On the other hand, our camera traps are already recording the presence of such important species as the tapir or peccaries, which can cross through the regeneration area again.

In addition, we have continued to support farmers and ranchers in the implementation of regenerative practices, through workshops and exchanges of experiences. The network is growing more and more and new ranchers are joining this group.

Kendall, a young rancher from the community of Los Planes, shared images of his farm with us. When he started the project, he called his farm “the brush keeper” because his land was so degraded that only brush grew. Now, after a year of implementing regenerative livestock practices, his farm has grass, trees growing on its fences, and has increased its carrying capacity/stocking rate. He is also very active inviting young ranchers to join the process.

Children continue to be a priority:

55 children are participating in the extracurricular activities that we organize to promote leadership, life skills, and of course, taking responsibility for environmental conservation. And we continue to visit 7 schools where we teach 174 students monthly, where we work on the objectives of sustainable development, working on such important topics as the right to water and our responsibility to care for this resource. This is how the cooperative theater play between organizations “La gotita Tita” was born, where Tita, the droplet and Anton, the shrimp, educated the children about the threats and contamination that our waters suffer, while they danced and sang with us.

We will close this semester with the II Big Beach Clean-up of Corcovado National Park, where from July 27, 28 and 29 we expect more than 50 volunteers who will be supporting the cleaning of the park's beaches, where tons of waste will be collected that arrive through the ocean currents and are affecting one of the most megadiverse spaces in the world.

We keep working thanks to you and people like you that support our programs. Please, share this project with your friends and family and keep supporting us.
