Green Hearts: Children, Nature, and Hope in 2025

Children are preparing to become little scientists
Children are preparing to become little scientists

This year, 2025, comes full of exciting projects.
The environmental education program has launched a project in collaboration with the local government to promote recycling in the rural schools of Drake, through a recycling competition among rural schools.

Through puppets and games like “"Catch Litterbug Larry" we have taught 152 students how to properly separate their waste and also how to reduce it. In February alone, nearly 2 tons of recyclable materials were collected. Additionally, we are working to establish organic school gardens in 3 schools so that students can learn from a young age how to grow food without chemicals.

Outside of schools, we continue with our extracurricular activities, working with four environmental groups. Through 22 workshops, children are preparing to become little scientists, learning about birds, their biology, and how to identify them, so they can begin monitoring the birds present in their communities.

Children from Progreso had the opportunity to use binoculars and observe birds such as the kingfisher, which proudly posed for them, allowing them to analyze its beak, legs, and colors. For many of these children, it was their first time using binoculars—quite a challenge for the youngest ones, but their gaze is also trained with the heart.

We celebrated the 47th anniversary of the Caño Island Biological Reserve with a beautiful community festival where 60 children, youth, and adults learned about its incredible biodiversity, as well as the threats it faces and the importance of protecting our reefs and oceans starting from the land.

We continue working to regenerate ecosystems hand in hand with local producers. Eleven families are organizing the first Agroecological Fair of Drake, which will highlight local culture and its products, all grown using regenerative agricultural practices. Its name, “Buen Vivir” (Good Living), symbolizes the mission of the participating producers.

We are also continuing to monitor progress on the farm we are helping to restore, where we planted over 4,000 trees and are now tracking their growth and biodiversity through ongoing monitoring efforts.
