Climate change affects us all, but what can we do at a community level to drive lasting change? Kisumu has one of the lowest forest covers in Kenya, worsening food insecurity and school absenteeism. Our project equips students with climate action education, empowering them to plant trees, create and care for school gardens, and champion sustainability. By engaging youth, we're growing a greener future-one tree, one garden, one lesson, one student at a time.
Kisumu County has just 0.44% forest cover, one of the lowest in Kenya. Poor forest cover inevitably strains the local ecosystem, leading to unpredictable rainfall, poor harvests, and rising food costs-forcing students in marginalised communities to go hungry and miss school. Without intervention, this environmental degradation and food insecurity cycle will persist for generations. Yet, many children don't learn about climate action or have the knowledge or tools to protect their future.
This project makes climate action a part of school life. Through hands-on workshops, students will plant trees, grow kitchen gardens, and join nature clubs to learn about conservation. Schools will serve as hubs for environmental action, ensuring students see trees and gardens as vital community assets. By fostering young climate champions, we're creating a culture of sustainability that extends beyond the classroom.
By the end of this project, we will have planted 10,000+ trees and plants across Kisumu County, conducted 100+ climate action workshops with 2,000+ students, and inspired a generation to make climate stewardship a lifelong commitment. As students carry these lessons into their future careers and communities, the impact will multiply, making Kisumu greener, more food secure, and resilient to climate change.
