Human rights talks with fishermen

We are pleased to share with you the most recent updates on the impact of your generous support in our activities. Thanks to your generosity, we have made significant progress in important projects for sustainable fisheries, environmental protection, and community well-being in Mulegé. We invite you to read this report and learn more about the progress we’ve made, and to continue supporting us in this meaningful work.

Monitoring and Permits

  • Community Monitoring: Community monitoring has been conducted to collect data on species, fishermen, and fishing locations. However, the funding from the Mexican Fund for Nature Conservation (FMCN) has ended, leading to a halt in the monitoring activities. We are exploring alternative solutions to continue the monitoring in Santa Rosalía, H. Mulegé, and San Bruno, which will allow for continuous evaluation of catches and fish populations.
  • Lobster Permits: We have completed the management of 14 lobster fishing permit applications with CONAPESCA. These permits are for research purposes, which means logbooks and records will be created to assess the possibility of granting commercial fishing permits in the future. We are awaiting a response from the fishing authorities.

Human Rights

  • Human Rights Education: Group and individual sessions were held with fishermen to discuss the Human Rights Policy and the complaint mechanisms of the Human Rights Commission. This was done to strengthen the fishermen’s and their families' understanding of their rights, as well as the channels available to exercise their rights and social and civil responsibilities.

Pilot Project: Recovery of Ghost Fishing Gear and Marine Plastics

  • Ghost Fishing Education: We continue to work on educating children aged 6 to 12 about ghost fishing, funded by Ocean Conservancy through the Global Ghost Gear Initiative. Talks were held in Santa Rosalía, reaching 13 groups of children.
  • Educational Meetings: We held meetings with educational authorities to coordinate future presentations in schools in H. Mulegé and San Bruno.
  • Visit from Oriana Smy: We had the visit of Oriana Smy, Communications and Marine Debris Specialist, who conducts research on marine litter behavior. Together, we took a tour of the fishing corridor (H. Mulegé, San Lucas, San Bruno, Santa Rosalía).

Key Impacts

  • Strengthened fishermen's knowledge of sustainability and human rights.
  • Expanded educational outreach in local schools, raising awareness about ghost fishing and marine conservation.
  • Progress in initiatives supporting sustainable fisheries and the reduction of marine waste.

We deeply appreciate the support of our donors, which enables us to continue promoting sustainable fisheries and community well-being in Mulegé. We are truly grateful for your continued support and remain committed to achieving our goals.
