Challenge

As in most small-scale fishing communities, the economic livelihood of the fishing families is based mainly on the capture of fish resources, so their priority is based on their work, which contributes to fishermen being unaware of much of their human rights and what is the appropriate social responsibility to exercise them, likewise, the geographical isolation of these communities and the little educational development also add to the challenge of developing a general social welfare.

Solution

These communities will have the opportunity to be empowered on social responsibility. Workshops will be held on the recognition of their human and labour rights, identification of harassment, forced labour, freedom of association and expression, gender equality and non discrimination, as well as the development of grievance mechanisms to encourage participation and social activism, on the other hand, they will be provided with access routes for social health and retirement services.

Long-Term Impact

The recognition and adoption of social responsibility will empower more than 50 families of three artisanal fishing communities and it drive them at a highly competitive level. Their social commitment will enhance the reputation and image of their fisheries. This results, integrated with the FIP goals (environmental, biological and technological aspects) is expected to achieve a sustainability fishery improving fish stocks, reaching new markets and better prices to their products.
