English Education for Rural Children in China

By Sebastien Carrier, Ph.D. | Program Director

2022 continues to be dominated by the epidemic in China, with regular school closures and event cancellations. In spite of these challenges, our team has carried on with providing online English classes to rural students in China, even reaching more beneficiaries than anticipated during the summer months. Thanks to our partners and more than 500 volunteers, about 3,500 rural students have benefitted from our online programs in 2022 so far. From January to September 2022, our volunteers and trainers have delivered an impressive total of 2,330 online lessons to students located either in a school classroom or in their home.

As the Fall 2022 semester has started, we are very excited to have resumed our online programs at many of our partner schools in rural China, while adding to our program 9 new schools in Henan, Yunnan and Guizhou. We are currently providing lessons to about 1,200 students located in 19 rural schools. At the same time, our Home Classroom Program – which consists of volunteers teaching online to a small group of students located in their own homes – is currently reaching more than 840 students across China. In total, more than 2,040 students are enrolled in one of our online English programs in the fall 2022 semester.

Along with providing English education to an increased number of children across China, we have continued to update and improve our lessons and teaching materials to ensure they stay practical and relevant to our students’ educational needs. For example, to help students enhance their speaking, reading and listening skills, new phonics classes were added to our curriculum. In our continuous effort to innovate, we have also equip some rural schools in Yunnan with talking pens and workbooks to help our students review their lessons and strengthen their language-knowledge retention.

It goes without saying that none of this would be possible without the efforts and dedication of all of our volunteers, donors and other supporters. Thank you all for your support!
