English Education for Rural Children, Fall 2021

By Sebastien Carrier, Ph.D. | Program Director

We have continued to provide online English classes to rural students in China. Thanks to our volunteers and partners, more than 4,000 students have benefitted from our online programs in 2021 so far.

Our Videolink Program - which consists of volunteers teaching online to 20-30 students located in a school classroom - served an increased number of students in rural areas. During the fall semester, we scaled up to 16 sites, covering now Anhui, Fujian, Henan, Yunnan, Jiangxi, and Guizhou, and 65 volunteers are currently delivering Videolink weekly lessons to more than 900 students. To improve our lesson delivery, we started using Class- in, an online platform specialized on setting up virtual classroom.

In addition to scale-up our Videolink Program, our Home Classroom Program also expanded significantly in the fall semester. Since October, 92 volunteers are now providing weekly English lessons to more than 800 students located in their own homes.

Along with expanding our online programs, we have also continued to review and update our teaching materials to ensure they stay relevant and practical. Our new lesson plans have received very positive feedback from partner schools and beneficiaries. We now aim to create more opportunities for students to learn and practice after having class.

We have been humbled by the many volunteers who helped us provide English classes to thousands of children in rural communities. Thanks to their generosity, our students have acquired a variety of new language skills and knowledge through the unique process of online learning.
