English Education for Rural Children, Spring 2021

By Sebastien Carrier, Ph.D. | Program Director

We have continued to provide online English classes to rural students in China. Thanks to our volunteers and partners, more than 1,712 students have benefitted from our online programs in 2021 so far.

Our Videolink Program - which consists of volunteers teaching online to 12-20 students located in a school classroom - expanded significantly to benefit more students in rural areas. We scaled up to 16 sites, covering Anhui, Fujian, Henan, Hubei, Jiangxi, and Yunnan. During the spring semester, 67 volunteers delivered Videolink lessons to more than 1,005 students, all using our newly developed interactive PPTs.

Besides expanding our Videolink program, we have also continued to grow our home classroom program. In the spring semester, 120 volunteers provided English lessons to 707 students located in their own homes. As parents are getting more familiar with the online platform to assist their children in taking lessons, we have received more positive feedback from both parents and beneficiaries. We are confident that our Home Classroom program will continue to expand and our new teaching model will create more opportunities for our beneficiaries to learn and improve their English.

Along with expanding our program, we have also continued to review and update our teaching materials to ensure they stay relevant and practical. Our curriculum development manager developed new lesson PPTs using a story-reading format. We also added more exercises and audio materials for students to review after class, making our teaching materials more comprehensive.

We are also pleased to report that GlobalGiving, in partnership with Airbnb, has awarded us a grant in the amount of $50,000.00 USD to help us fulfill our mission of improving the education and general welfare of disadvantaged children in China.
