English Education for Rural Children, Spring 2020

By Yili Huang | Events Manager

As the COVID-19 crisis has deepened around the world, Stepping Stones is focused on keeping our students and volunteers connected while prioritizing health and safety. Students are unable to return to their regular schools. To respond to this situation, we have trained volunteers to teach children who are under home-quarantine. In February, the first batch of volunteers from around the world were trained up to deliver their first English classes to children from our partner schools, and lessons started the following day.

Children can log into the online platform Zoom via a smartphone, tablet or computer to attend the English lessons taught by volunteer teachers, supported by the children’s parents. To ensure the good quality of the teaching, we maintain a small class size, with one volunteer to five students. We have tailored the curriculum to make them suitable for teaching grades 2-5 in the Home Classroom context.

In the spring of 2020, while still working with our height partner schools in Shanghai, Anhui, Henan, Hunan, and Fujian Pucheng (Tanglaoya), we also started the program in Jiaxing Shixingzhe community center (Zhejiang).

From February till end of March, we had more than 24 trained volunteers who were teaching weekly English classes via the internet to more than 180 children. In total, our volunteers delivered 36 online lessons, all using our interactive PPTs. Volunteers and children had a great time with English learning activities!

We are pleased that our online English lessons helped support and encourage children facing isolation and stigma due to the coronavirus outbreak. Apart from providing them with a fun way to improve their English, this also gives them some comfort from the outside world.

Thank you all for your support!
