Periods do not pause in pandemics... With the reopening of schools in the last quarter of the year, Talia Women's Network provided sanitary pads, hygiene products and menstrual health and hygiene education to the girls in rural and peri-urban schools. This gave the girls one less thing to worry about as they were focusing on final exams as the year came to an end.
While is is important to focus on menstrual health and hygiene, the conversations with the school girls revealed the need for mental health interventions. The pandemic resulted in a lot of disruption to life as they knew it as well as uncertainty for the future. This impacted the mental health of most school girls. The girls had reduced interaction with their peers due to the restricted movement and prolonged school closures. We utilised the opportunity we had as we met with groups of girls to discuss on the life issues that were impacting them and we created a safe space where they could offload and discuss the burden of the challenges they were facing without judgement. The girls were given the support and respect they deserve. Unfortunately, there has been an increase in girls dropping out of school because of teen and unwanted pregnancies.
A girl's soccer tournament was organised by MTC Girls Inc. in rural Chimanimani and Talia Women's Network took the opportunity to speak to the girls gathered for the tournament on menstrual health and hygiene and distributed menstrual hygiene products.
