Our mission at 3 Generations is to provide a vital platform for victims of sex trafficking to tell their stories and demand that sex trafficking be recognized as a human rights abuse. Over the past twelve years, we’ve created over twenty videos, three award-winning short films, and a feature documentary, Tricked, about the horrors and nuances of sex trafficking. These films provide a platform for survivors and educate viewers about the truth behind trafficking.
As we continue our fight to end sex trafficking, we are looking back at our short film, What About the Boys, which features Nik, a survivor of sex trafficking. Nik’s story dispels some of the common myths about gay prostitution and offers a heart-wrenching look at how one young American boy was brutally forced into sex work. Today, Nik is well and has spent many evenings helping LGBTQ sex workers. His training as a psychologist and his experience as a survivor is a powerful combination. It has been an honor to witness his journey. We encourage you to watch What About the Boys, the Facebook live we hosted in collaboration with Nik 2020, and our many additional sex trafficking films.
Last year, 3G’s founder and creative director, Jane Wells, was interviewed by Authority magazine in an article highlighting filmmakers making a social impact. Jane shared: “Another unforgettable experience was filming a sex worker in Chicago at about 3:00 a.m. one hot summer night. She was 100% under pimp control, and indeed, her pimp was at the interview. She explained how he treated her well, brought her food when she was finished working, etc. At the end, I asked her, “What’s your secret dream?” She replied it was to see a palm tree in Florida. When the interview was over, I took her pimp aside and asked him to please take her there one day soon. I often think of her and hope she made it. (The average life expectancy of a street sex worker is 7 years; this happened about 11 years ago.)”
Despite the atrocities they face, survivors of sex trafficking have found empowerment, courage, and a voice. Even beyond our documentation of them, our subjects continue to share their experience and advocate for the end of sex trafficking. Although these human rights abuses remain in the shadows, 3G continues to advocate for sex trafficking survivors and document their truths. To stay updated on our work, watch our film, and support our fight to end trafficking, please visit our website, sign up for our newsletter, and join the conversation on social media. We thank you for your ongoing support and generosity. Together, we can make a difference.
