SEXUAL VIOLENCE AS A TOOL OF WAR
Sexual violence against women and children lurks in the shadows of our world, rarely spoken of, always cruel, and designed to inflict trauma, shame, and dehumanization. Perhaps that is why it has taken time for much of the world to acknowledge the horrors perpetrated by Hamas against Israeli women on October 7th, even as we grieve for the loss of life in Gaza.
OUT OF THE SHADOWS
We have consistently brought attention to little-known or overlooked human rights abuses, and the hardest to speak of is sexual violence against women and children. Our founder and creative director, Jane Wells, first became aware of this when listening to Darfuri women in 2005, then to Rwandan genocide survivors in 2007, and later to Yazidi victims of ISIS. As we brought these atrocities to light, she learned that similar violence had happened during the Holocaust in the Nazi concentration camps.
CREATING TRUST AND BEARING WITNESS
As a women-led organization, 3 Generations has gained the trust of victims of all faiths and genders as we have witnessed their stories. Working not so far out of the shadows ourselves, we operate year in and year out to awaken the world to the truths of the unspeakable. And this work is far from over.
SEXUAL VIOLENCE HAS NO PLACE IN A BETTER WORLD
Regardless of the political complexities of our world today, we believe those who perpetrate acts of sexual violence against women and children can not be accepted merely as a side effect of war. At 3G, we work to find common humanity and create a safer world.
