3 Generations has been documenting stories of sex trafficking for more than 10 years. We have created many films and videos recording survivor’s testimony. We believe that sharing these accounts will better inform the public about the victims and their realities.
Most people believe that sex trafficking involves women and children being kidnapped off the street, smuggled across borders, and moved from place to place and that is rarely the case. The majority of women and children most vulnerable to sexual exploitation are those living in poverty and unstable conditions. Many have been sexually abused as children. Most of the children are known to child services and are in foster care.
Data shows that traffickers target certain groups of people that don’t have support and the ability to get accountability or justice for themselves. It is far more likely that children know their exploiters and can even be related to them than to be kidnapped by a stranger. Focusing on kids being abducted or on a child trafficking cabal leads to a misunderstanding of the true problem and helps to perpetuate this cycle of abuse that fuels a billion dollar industry. Also when the victims don’t fit this model of innocent children from suburbia who are taken by some unknown, they are often considered by society and the justice system as criminals instead of victims.
There are many in the field who are working to change these perceptions and advances have been made towards the treatment of survivors of sexual exploitation. Unfortunately now with the pandemic there are more people being put in vulnerable positions and the sex trafficking industry is thriving. We won’t know the full impact of it for years to come.
