Katalemwa Cheshire Home is a rehabilitation center aimed at improving the lives of children with disabilities through surgery, and provision of orthopedic appliances such as wheelchairs, crutches, braces in Uganda. The home facilitates orthopedic, plastic and neurological surgical interventions, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, casting and postoperative care. The project targets children with disabilities from poor families in Uganda identified through community care.
In Uganda many of children with disabilities come from very poor families especially in the rural areas and poor urban centres. As a result of cultural beliefs related to disability in many of our communities they are excluded against by society and are therefore among the most marginalized members of the community. The prevalence of disability among children in Uganda is about 12% or 2.5 Million. In terms of care and protection, many CWDs continue to be abused, exploited, and isolated
Katelemwa Cheshire Home will facilitate the inclusion of children with disabilities in mainstream development through supporting and facilitating surgeries, provision of orthopedic appliances, and postoperative nursing care. Children will be able to exercise their basic rights.
The children with disabilities will improve in accessibility and mobility, children will be able to access their basic rights, children will gain self confidence, self esteem and assertiveness and be less dependent. This project will change attitude of people in communities where these children come from, there will be increased participation in developmental activities by children with disabilities. improved well being. increased enrollment and reduced dropout as a result of disability.
