"Life has always been a struggle to me. I married at a tender age and could not get the opportunity to study due to the poor means and lack of access to education. My father never had a stable job because and a result family always struggled with financial crises.
Post-marriage, we continued to struggle to meet both ends meet as my husband didn’t have a regular job. The situation worsened further during the pandemic as my entire family ran into a deep crisis of hunger. The built-up stress caused discord in our relationships and my husband started abusing me out of frustration and deprivation.
We lost all hope and were on the brink of collapse when Sukarya intervened and offered an opportunity to work under its SCPU [Spice and cereal processing unit] of Women Empowerment cell. This changed the entire course of my life. In the span of three months of working at Sukarya’s SCPU Unit, my life situation changed drastically for better as I became an earning source of my family and was able to feed my family properly”.
This is the story of Sunita, 35, and a resident of Rangpuri Slum in Gurugram. As an empowered mother, she has already restarted the education of her children. Now Sunita is able to pay the tuition fee of her children.
The sustainable income source has given stability to the family to do well with enhanced respect for her in the family. Sunita now understands the importance of financial independence which is the core of women's empowerment. She wants to continue the work for a long and aspires to begin her own micro-entrepreneurship in the future to generate more employment opportunities for other women in her community.
