Empowering Rural Women Progress Report

December 15, 2017 to March 15, 2018

SUKARYA had began its women empowerment program by creating Self –Help Groups [SHGs] in villages during 2005-06. Since then Women group have been activity involved in pursuit of Socio- economic empowerment. Project study reveals that women who never used to step outside the four walls of their home are now becoming business savvy and supplementing their family income. 

The economic benefits gained from enrolling in the production groups are found to be high in terms of generating income individually, understanding banking operations to avail credit facility, developing courage to think independently, and managing group activities after joining the group. Furthermore the social empowerment of the members in terms of team spirit, talking freely within family, confidence in dealing with people are enhanced. 

Key deliverables during the quarter:

Spice & Cereal processing unit [SCPU]:

Total no. of rural women engaged – 04

The International Women's day [IWD] was celebrated on 8th March 2018 at Sukarya with all staff especially with female field workers and Self –Help Group [SHGs] members who is making significant changes and creating impact under SHGs/Women Empowerment program and as community Health workers across villages and slums.

Women from community, field workers and Self–Help Group [SHGs] members spoke about their experiences and journey from a mere household member to an empowered women with a voice making significant contribution and impacts in lives for themselves, for their families and communities as a whole.

Women members also sang local song “Lok Geet” (folk songs) and danced on the occasion and expressed their happiness and freedom.

 

Geeta from Bandhwari village Gurgaon says,  “I cannot forget ever my first interaction with Sukarya staff when they encouraged & motivated me to become member of SHG and opt skills training to generate income. It has been over 8 years I am associated with SHGs and Spice & cereal work.  I feel confident and worthy of being a women. I earned good respect and status within the family and community as I earned for myself and support my family. I would always remain thankful to Sukarya for its incredible support to me."
