Maryam is a 4 year old child and something was off with her, for her first years she would just lie on her back. She was the first child of the family and the parents went from doctor to doctor and no one knew what to do. The parents started to feel hopeless. In 2020 we visited this family for the first time. While the mother was sharing the story of her daughter she cried; she had no hope anything could be done and did not believe anymore Maryam would get better.
The CBR team tried to encourage the parents that there is hope and mentioned physical therapy could help to improve Maryam’s condition. Initially, the parents were skeptical but after a few months they started to see improvement. A seed of hope was planted and the parents became motivated to continue doing exercises with their daughter.
Again a few months later there was clearly visible improvement. For the first two years of her life, she only lied on her back, but now she could sit with help of her mother. Slowly she improved from sitting with help to sitting independently, standing on her feet, taking her first step. And all the time our CBR team kept encouraging the family to continue the daily exercises. After a year and half working with this family Maryam was able to walk 15 steps with no help. The parents now believe she can live a normal life like any other child. Imagine their joy!
