Desperate for Help and Hope

By Steffanie Cunard | Project Leader

Yousif, a 4 year old with a diagnosis of spina bifida lay curled up in the corner on the floor of the living room. The doctors had told them to give up hope for their son, he was disabled and would remain that way until he dies. Not to mention there were people in their family who also insulted Yousif, calling him degrading names like idiot and stupid. This family was desperate for help and hope. Their dream was to see him walk and go to school but he had only been crawling for the first 4 years of his life. In alignment with Operation Mercy’s principles: the physical therapist told Yousif his value and worth. The whole family was in tears as they had never experienced a doctor who had treated their son with dignity and value. Over a few weeks of treatment the whole demeanor of this family has changed. Progressing through exercises, Yousif has made many improvements in his range of motion and mobility now being able to pull to stand, walk on his knees and strengthen his legs in preparation for his upcoming surgery. Now, he awaits a surgery that will happen to correct the deformities in his feet that occurred due to the lack of therapy and education in his early years.

To increase his independent mobility and curiosity with different forms of ambulation especially outside the home we provided Yousif a wheelchair until his surgery when we will focus on walking. The new form of mobility and freedom he has led him to explore new ways to move around the house, including attempts at walking! The family now engages in meaningful play with him and positive affirmation towards him. They see his progress and are excited for his future. Each visit they are excited and thankful as they cannot wait to see what improvements he still has to make.
