Summary

Las Omas is a non-profit that serves 300 women from vulnerable situations in Cordoba, Argentina. These women often lack formal education, have limited job opportunities, and often are victims of gender-based violence. The organization provides job training for these women in fields such as cosmetology, clothing production, and the food industry. Currently, Las Omas lacks a facility to carry out these activities, so this project involves constructing their own building.

Challenge

Chacra de la Merced was once a booming agricultural area that has since been exploited by wastewater treatment facilities. Recognizing that women were disproportionately impacted, Las Omas began to provide training to increase the opportunities for their economical autonomy . Currently, the local church lends the group a small room for their activities, however they are limited by space and resources.

Solution

This project involves constructing a 210 square-meter space that Las Omas can use for their workshops and training activities. The project was co-designed with 100 women in different participatory workshops. EWB-Ar will work closely with Las Omas during the construction phase, ensuring that women participate. The goal is to provide these women with additional opportunities to gain construction experience, while creating a space that they will be able to use moving forward.

Long-Term Impact

This initiative seeks to improve the quality of life of women living in Chacra de La Merced by increasing their access to educational and training opportunities. Over the long term, this is expected to benefit these women both personally and financially. Upon completion of this project, Las Omas will own this facility, meaning that they can continue to serve the local community for years to come.
