Help Mothers and Girls Earn a Brighter Future

In early March, GlobalGiving held its annual Girl Fund Campaign, a chance for all organisations that focus on empowering women to have a shot at securing year-long funding. Whilst this project did not secure year-long funding, we wanting to thank all of you who came together to make a donation - you helped us raise a phenomenal $7,139/£5.461 in just one week. The most exciting part of the week was Kids for Kids' Birthday on International Women's Day, Friday 8th March. Your kind donations saw a bonus matching from GlobalGiving and helped us celebrate our Birthday in a most wonderful way.

Speaking of Empowering Women, you may already know that we have committed our help this year to a whole eight new villages: Bargo, Derma, Abu Sinait A and Abu Sinait B, Um Isheira, Um Ajaja, Um Shijir, and Turra. Conditions are very bad in Darfur. People across the country are struggling in the wake of soaring inflation, and essentials including food and medication are scarce.  The phrase 'people live on the breadline' is graphic for life in Sudan, but the price of bread has soared. In Darfur, because of its isolation, years of neglect and the tragedy of drought have taken a bitter toll. We are needed now more than ever before.  There are changes afoot in Sudan, but whomever is in charge it will be years before things will improve in Darfur.

There are 3,347 women in these villages who need our help. The villages are currently in inception meetings, confirming the 15% of families in each village where the mothers will be the first beneficiaries, receiving goats, a donkey, blankets, mosquito nets, and other basic essentials. With a total of 1,797 families in the eight new villages, 270 families will be the first to benefit. The mothers in these families will begin earning their very own income, gaining control of their own lives, often for the first time ever.
