Help Mothers and Girls Earn a Brighter Future

In our last project report we mentioned that our most recent class of midwives were about to graduate! Well we are pleased to tell you that on December 10th 2018, 34 women became certified village midwives! In fact, Kids for Kids midwives held some of the top results in their exams, placed second, third, fourth, fifth, seventh, and eighth out of the whole graduating class.  When you think that their schooling was in a small primitive building in a remote village you can get an idea of how determined they are to do well.  What incredible women we now have in our villages! All have returned home and are now helping to deliver babies safely in their own villages.

This has us thinking about the new year, and how many more women we are going to help. You may have heard about the demonstrations in Sudan, coming directly from people that cannot afford to buy a loaf of bread, families who are facing starvation due to the rising inflation, parents trying desperately to feed their hungry children. The international community is doing little to help, but the public can, you can, by supporting our life changing sustainable projects - empowering women to earn an income, to afford both bread and school fees for their young children. By empowering the women in our villages we are creating sustainable change for the whole family, village, community, and region of Darfur. We are giving people hope and a way to take control of their own lives, often for the first time ever.

As I write, Patricia Parker MBE, Founder and CEO of Kids for Kids, is headed off to participate in Programme Meetings with the team from Darfur. During these meetings, we will review the applications from the villages that have applied for our support this year. It will be hard as we cannot afford to adopt more than five, and we receive more applications every year. We will never adopt a village unless we can be 100% certain that we can deliver all our projects to the families we have promised to help. "I could not bear to let down a mother, hoping desperately that she will have help to look after her children," says Patricia. "Raising hope to dash it, especially for people so desperately in need, would be unforgivable."

Last year, 154 women received goats and a donkey - 15% of the poorest families in each village we adopted. Next year, 154 more women from those same villages will benefit from the goat loan. This year we will do the same for the new villages. Two midwives from each new village will be trained as well, undoubtedly reaching high exam results just like their peers this year.
