Summary

Wayua needs startup funds for her dressmaking business. This project will enable her to purchase items necessary for dressmaking along with 3 months rent for a sewing shop. Wayua is now responsible for her elderly grandmother and 3 cousins. Wayua and her cousins are all orphaned. The grandmother's health prevents her from working. Managing and providing for the household is now Wayua's responsibility. Wayua is only 17 years old, but she has the skills, tenacity and ambition to succeed.

Challenge

Makindu is an extreme poverty-stricken village in rural eastern Kenya. Few opportunities are available for girls. 17 year old Wayua will soon find herself responsible for a household of 4 children, all orphaned, and an elderly grandmother. Wayua is a gifted and talented seamstress, but has no sewing supplies of her own. Given the necessary tools and equipment, Wayua can be a successful seamstress and business woman, and should be able to support her family.

Solution

Funding this project will enable Wayua to launch her dressmaking and tailoring business for which she is quite talented. Once launched, her business will help feed, clothe and care for herself, her grandmother and 3 orphaned cousins.

Long-Term Impact

Success with this project will empower Wayua to not only be self-sufficient, but also to care for her family that so desperately needs her. With success, Wayua will be a role model to the other children served at Makindu Children's Program. With support and ambition, she will show others that success can be achieved, even against all odds.
