Empower the youth - let's give them voice

In December 2023, we held another workshop for a group of young debaters from a primary school in Olecko. The students prepared very thoroughly for the debate and participated with great enthusiasm, despite initially feeling quite nervous.

We invited several people to be part of the jury, including the school principal. The principal was so impressed by the students' debating skills that he proposed a challenge – a debate against him! To our surprise, the students eagerly accepted the challenge.

We suggested to the principal that both sides should have an equal number of participants to make the debate more dynamic and engaging. The principal selected teachers to participate in the debate while he joined us in the observer's box.

The principal asked the students to come up with the debate's thesis. They chose the topic: "A gifted student does not receive support in developing their potential at school." After the winter break, we visited the school several times to prepare both teams for the debate. Unfortunately, apart from one dedicated teacher who regularly attended the workshops, the rest of the teaching staff was absent.

The students not only researched arguments and counterarguments but also conducted a survey in the school to gather their peers' opinions on the thesis. Over half of the students from grades 5-8 participated in the survey prepared by the young debate team, providing them with strong arguments for the debate.

The debate took place on May 21, 2024, in the gymnasium. It was a very ceremonial event, and the debate itself was extremely interesting. The students drew the proposition side, while the teachers, in opposition, had to prepare to refute the thesis.

After the debate, the jury (comprising teachers and a student) evaluated the arguments, speaking skills of each debater, teamwork, and the coherence of each team's arguments. Then, they announced the results… the students won the debate!

What did the students learn from this debate? We believe it taught them more than any lesson could – it showed them that young people can discuss important issues on an equal footing with adults, taught them the art of rhetoric, how to research and verify arguments, and how to conduct school surveys. One of the debaters told us that she practiced arguing and counterarguing with her sister on any chosen topic before the debate. This experience taught them that true arguments are harder to refute and that if they want to negotiate something, they need to find rational arguments.

For us, this is a wonderful result of our educational efforts! We are planning more debates after the summer holidays.

Pierwsza debata uczniowie kontra nauczyciele

W grudniu przeprowadzilismy kolejne warsztaty dla grupy mlodych debatantów ze szkoly podstawowej w miejscowosci Olecko. Mlodziez przygotowala sie do debaty bardzo starannie i z wielkim zaangazowaniem uczestniczyla w dyskusji, mimo ze poczatkowo miala spora treme.

W sklad Jury zaprosilismy miedzy innymi dyrektora szkoly. Dyrektor byl pod tak wielkim wrazeniem poziomu debatowania, ze zaproponowal uczniom wyzwanie – debate z nim! Ku naszemu zaskoczeniu, mlodziez chetnie przystala na te propozycje.

Zaproponowalismy dyrektorowi, aby w debacie po obu stronach uczestniczyla taka sama liczba osób, co uczyniloby dyskusje bardziej barwna i dynamiczna. Dyrektor wytypowal nauczycieli do udzialu w debacie, a sam zasiadl razem z nami w lozy obserwatora.

Dyrektor zaproponowal, aby to uczniowie wymyslili teze debaty. Wybrali oni temat: „Zdolny uczen nie otrzymuje w szkole wsparcia w rozwoju swojego potencjalu”. Po feriach kilkukrotnie odwiedzalismy szkole, aby przygotowac obie druzyny do debaty. Niestety, poza jednym nauczycielem, który regularnie uczestniczyl w warsztatach, reszta kadry nauczycielskiej byla nieobecna. 

Mlodziez przygotowujac sie do debaty, nie tylko szukala argumentów i kontrargumentów, ale równiez przeprowadzila sondaz w szkole, aby zbadac opinie rówiesników na temat tezy. Ponad polowa uczniów z klas 5-8 wziela udzial w ankiecie przygotowanej przez mloda druzyne debatancka, co dalo im mocne argumenty na debate.

Debata odbyla sie 21 maja 2024 w sali gimnastycznej. Bylo bardzo uroczyscie, a sama debata okazala sie niezwykle ciekawa. Mlodziez wylosowala strone propozycji, a nauczyciele, bedac w opozycji, musieli przygotowac sie na obalanie tezy.

Po debacie, Jury (skladajace sie z nauczycieli i uczennicy) ocenialo zarówno argumentacje, umiejetnosci mówcze, jak i prace zespolowa oraz spójnosc argumentacji obu druzyn. Wyniki ogloszono… i debate wygrali mlodzi!

Czego nauczyla mlodych ta debata? Uwazamy, ze dala im wiecej niz niejedna lekcja – pokazala, ze mlodziez moze na równi z doroslymi dyskutowac o waznych sprawach, nauczyla ich kultury wypowiedzi, szukania i weryfikowania argumentów, a takze prowadzenia sondazy szkolnych. Jedna z uczestniczek powiedziala nam, ze przed debata cwiczyla argumentacje i kontrargumentacje z siostra na dowolnie wybrany temat. Dzieki tej debacie mlodziez zrozumiala, ze prawdziwe argumenty trudniej obalic i ze chcac cos wynegocjowac, musza poszukac racjonalnych argumentów.
