34 GIRLS READY TO ATTEND SECONDARY SCHOOL

By Diana Richardson | Executive Director

Makindu Children's Program (Makindu) is proud to report the expectation that 20 girls we support scored 300+ points on their high school entrance exams last month and thus will qualify for high school. Schools follow the calendar year in Kenya and so these girls will begin high school (called Form One for freshmen) in January. One year of education and basic expenses run approximately $600 a year, or $50 a month. High School goes 4 years bringing the total needed per girl to $2,400.

Sending these girls to high school will be life-changing and transformative for them. Not only will they gain an education, they will also gain social ties with their school community building more lifelong friendships and networks. They will gain self confidence and respect. They will be less likely to fall victim to early pregnancy or early marriage. They will be empowered to give back to their communities. They will be empowered to achieve success. They will be prepared to seek a post-secondary education at college or university. They will be empowered to lead the next generation of women toward a better future.

Makindu is equally proud to report that another 14 girls will be enrolling in vocational school in January. Some of the vocations include accounting, technology, hairdressing and tailoring.  One year of education and basic expenses run approximately $400 a year, or $35 a month. Vocational Programs run 2 years. An end of program exam costs an additional $400 bringing the total needed per girl to $1,200.

Another 250+ little girls will continue their education in primary school.

In addition to providing all these girls with access to education and opportunity for empowerment, Makindu will continue to provide them all with the basic necessities of nutrition, health and mental care, advocacy and counseling, shelter and support.

Thank you for enabling Makindu to empower so many girls!
