White River Fish Sanctuary - Update # 5

By Reanne McKenzie | Sanctuary Manager

Our current wardens are consistently participating in skills training with our local Marine Police. This ensures a group of efficient enforcers, as well as increased proficiency in apprehension and preparing court cases. The number of persons attempting to fish within the sanctuary has increased. We believe it is a direct result of person seeing an increase of fish within the area. Education is especially important during these times, and reminding the local fishermen the importance of the sanctuary and to exercise patience as the environment works on restoring itself naturally. Where education does not work with some fishermen, legal action would be take against them unfortunately.

Thanks to donations given, the team will be able to train and employ a few more community members to become sanctuary wardens! This is a huge accomplishment for the White River Fish Sanctuary (WRFS) and a goal we've hoped to accomplish since 2019. With the addition of new wardens, the sanctuary can run patrols for 16-20 hours a day, which is definitely necessary.

The nursey corals are healthy and ready to be outplanted. Our team of coral gardeners are waiting patiently for average sea temperature to cool down by a few degrees before the outplanting activities begin (our favourite activity).

The WRFS team has also had a number of volunteers over the past few months  to help with monitoring of the outplanted corals and maintenance of nurseries.

Thank you for the continued support, from all of us at the White River Fish Sanctuary!
