White River Fish Sanctuary - June Update

By Reanne McKenzie | Sanctuary Manager

Sanctuary Update #9 June:
-Our wardens are currently undergoing training with local Marine Police. This will hopefully better equip them to apprehend offenders, especially at night. Securitizing the fish sanctuary is a risky but necessary aspect of ensuring the fish sanctuary functions as intended, to keep the fish inside its boundaries!
- The literacy programme has just ended, with majority of our fishermen saying they have improved in basic reading, and environmental issues/solutions. The literacy program was not only offered to fishermen who work as coral gardeners or wardens, but also other fishermen from the White River community. We believe that conservation can only take case alongside community development. The White River Fish Sanctuary is commited to not only improving the coral reef ecosystem's health, but also mproving the lives of fishermen.
Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to your next visit!
