Twende is a local NGO with 5+ years of running hands-on design training with 1100+ participants from a range of backgrounds. We believe with the right support, education and tools, we can empower everyone to create innovative solutions, using local materials, to solve the daily challenges faced by those living in rural poverty. By fostering a solution-oriented mindset, we create stronger, more equitable communities with greater economic potential.
Rural Tanzanians live in poverty, lacking access to many basic conveniences common in more affluent areas. Appropriate facilities fostering education, like well-equipped classrooms, proper equipment and technology are unavailable. Too often the solution is seen as requiring a hand-out rather than a hand up. By hosting classes, workshops and events, and providing lab space at the Twende facility, we will empower our people to think through and develop innovative solutions to their problems.
We will train people to creatively come up with solutions and develop tools and technologies to solve their problems, focusing on problem identification, user-centered design, and basic mechanical, electrical and other related skills. By providing them with hands-on experience we ensure that our program participants learn real-life skills they can continue to leverage after the programs have concluded.
By filling a gap in the current educational system, Twende will empower people to innovate grassroots solutions to problems relating to poverty, education, housing, food security, community health and well-being. This will lead to internally-driven sustainable change and allow Tanzanians to become self-sufficient in identifying and solving their own problems.
