Confidence is built through knowledge, and courage is sparked by support
We extend our heartfelt gratitude for the continued spark you ignite in our girls. Our last report, Girls' Day the RKF Way: Empowerment & Celebration, highlighted the celebration and impact of the Girls’ Empowerment Workshops held on the International Day of The Girl Child through Juma’s story. In today’s report, we share a different perspective through the lens of a workshop facilitator, offering a deeper insight into the experience and its lasting impact.
Girl's Empowerment Workshops at Nyamware - Teacher Gloria's perspective
Ms. Gloria, a teacher at Central Primary School with a degree in Special Education, is passionate about student welfare. She felt her role as a Guidance Counsellor deeply aligned with the mission of our Girls’ Empowerment Workshop, inspiring her active involvement during International Day of the Girl Child.
After a bumpy ride on the rural murram roads of Nyando, we arrived at Nyamware Junior School, located near Lake Victoria's shores. It was early on a Monday morning, so things were a little disorganised, but the students were excited about our presence. We quickly set up for the sessions so we could begin our workshops and get down to business.
Being in a rural setting, exposure to open discussions, especially concerning body changes and menstruation, is minimal. The girls and mothers who attended the workshops were initially shy, hesitant to speak, and visibly surprised by our openness to discuss vaginal and menstrual health. Having grown up in a similar environment, I could understand their hesitation and empathised with them. However, I am confident that the foundation was laid - change, after all, is a work in progress. I am hopeful our next visit will be full of dialogues and stories of these girls empowering their peers.” She shares this hope for regular training sessions to sensitise and train the community to leave a lasting and transformative impact.
Reflecting on the sessions' impact, Ms. Gloria shares, “Being a teenager can be overwhelming, but knowing that there is support from a mother can make all the difference. Therefore, the practice and emphasis on mother-daughter relationships is the most powerful aspect of the workshops. Additionally, economic hardships continue to weigh heavily on families, particularly in the current economy. The provision of reusable sanitary kits alleviates a financial burden and ensures that girls can manage their periods confidently.”
We empowered fifty-seven school-going teenage girls from Nyamware Primary School with sanitary pad kits consisting of reusable pads lasting 12 to 18 months, panties, toilet paper, soap, a bucket, a Girl Talk booklet, and life-transforming training.
When asked to imagine her 13-year-old self attending these workshops, Ms. Gloria paused, reflecting on her teenage years. She recalled that such conversations were primarily led by the church but lacked depth and detail. If she had received RKF’s training sessions at that age, she believes she would have been better in many aspects of her life, understanding her body better, navigating relationships more confidently, and embracing self-awareness much earlier.
Her words serve as a testament to the power of these workshops. They are not just sessions but life-changing experiences that equip girls with the knowledge, confidence, and support they need to thrive.
Upcoming Workshops in 2025
Ms. Gloria’s story is just one example of the incredible impact these workshops create. But there are still many girls facing the same challenges - missing school due to a lack of menstrual resources, struggling with self-confidence, and lacking crucial education on their changing bodies.
This year, we are amplifying our efforts to empower more girls through education and support. Our goal for 2025 is to reach 1,000 girls. For every $15 you donate, you can empower one girl with a 12 - 18 month sanitary pad kit and life-changing training for her and her mother. Alongside the reusable pads, each sanitary kit contains 2 panties, soap, tissue paper and a Girl Talk Booklet, all neatly packed in a bucket.
Mark your calendars:
These transformative workshops will empower girls with essential resources and training, enabling them to flourish and pursue their educational dreams without barriers.
