One of the beneficiaries born with cerebral palsy
This project has benefitted women groups taking care of vulnerable families in Kenya by continuing to empower the women in ways to improve health, nutrition, and education. In the last two months, a total of 200 women were reached in Kenya and engaged in educational activities through workshops and other forums to enhance their knowledge in the above areas to have better health and improved nutrition through better farming methods, better hygiene and initiating income generating projects.
The 200 women in Western and Eastern provinces were reached through train the trainer method. The core groups of 10 women in each location went out in villages and recruited other women to attend workshops. Home visits were conducted by trained women to reach more women who were not able to attend formal workshops and other forums. As the women become knowledgeable whole families and communities are benefitting from the knowledge acquired by the women. The empowered women will continue to reach out to more until the target of 500 is reached.
SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES
Training and Empowerment
- Improvement of farming activities: 3-day training of core 10 women
- Government officers trained women in farming local crops such as maize, beans, groundnuts, green leafy traditional vegetables, flowers as well as poultry farming
- Training women in better home-based care for people living with HIV & AIDS, children orphaned due to AIDS and other needy families:
o Women attended trainings and empowerment seminars by professionals in various fields e.g education, health care, counselling
o Community health workers made home visits to provide hands-on training
- Community health workers trained women and girls in hygienic
- Mobilizing and supporting more children to attend school through groups working together to ensure all children attend school:
o School fees was paid differently based on individual needs
o Uniforms and books for some depending on uniqueness of each case
o Food was also provided for some orphaned children that
- 5,000-liter water tank purchased by one group for rain water storage
