Despite the grave conditions that prompted initiation of the Seed Bank project, the donations have not been sufficient for operations especially for the costs associated with the AG technicians needed to train and support the beneficiaries.
Furthermore, the weather conditions have been prohibitive to successful harvests, and conditions in the area declined after the assassination last year of the country's President. The resulting chaos includes rising fuel prices, crime, and further decay of social and economic conditions in Haiti.
At this time, there is conflict between police and protestors in Limonade where Sonje-Ayiti is located. Residents have been confined to their homes for the past two weeks. The management of banks, offices, and businesses are fearful to open their operations. The area is shut down, and unfortunately there have been deaths due to starvation.
It is with regret that Sonje-Ayiti has no choice but to close the project at this time. Hopefully, it can be restarted when the climate stabilizes.
