Phase 11 of the seed distribution was completed in March 2021 There was a variety of contributed seeds including onions, tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash, greens, broccoli, melons, carrots, cabbage, spinach, beets, peas, and okra that were distributed to farmers, schools, and women’s groups in several communities.
Although the women in the communities have been especially vigilant about growing their own food to feed their families, there remains the challenges of securing necessary tools to maximize their efforts. Furthermore, the cost to retain the two Ag technicians who support the farmers and other participants is currently beyond the financial ability of Sonje Ayiti. As a result, the harvest over the past several months has been poor.
The recent flooding in the Northeast resulting from two days of heavy rains presents additional challenges as this disaster further threatens agricultural produce in the region.
Although these are resilient communities whose members take pride in what they have been able to accomplish, they are facing almost insurmountable odds as the challenges to their lives increase almost daily.
