There are millions of people in Indonesia that live below the poverty line, making less than $1.00 a day. These people live hand-to-mouth, meaning they make only enough money each day to feed themselves for that day, and when their income is gone, they literally have nothing. As the COVID-19 health crisis is causing devastating economic effects, many people have lost their jobs and all sources of income. These families are in critical and urgent need of assistance.
Pelita Indonesia has identified hundreds of families in the areas we serve that are facing major hardships at this time. We will begin dispersing survival food packets that include rice, oil, canned meat, sugar, and instant noodles. Each packet costs around $20 and will help feed a family for two weeks. We will also provide hygiene packs to TB patients in need, which will include mask, gloves, soap, hand sanitizer and other helpful essentials.
By providing this assistance, these families will not be forced to take high interest loans or to sell what few possessions they have in order to feed their families. For the homeless we serve, they will not be forced to steal or resort to other illegal and dangerous methods to obtain food. For the impoverished TB patients we serve, they will get much needed hygiene essentials that will help lower their risk of contracting COVID-19 and they will also receive food packets if needed.
