With our Search & Rescue team returning to South Africa, we continue to provide emergency medical care at our two hospitals in Syria. We are providing emergency relief items such as tents, sleeping bags, gas heaters and portable toilets, and daily meals to those affected. From our kitchen in Darkoush we serve meals as far as Northern regions of Syria, & Turkey. Additionally, we've established a compound along the Turkish border that provides shelter to more than 350 families.
In the wake of a disaster, families face the loss of loved one, are left homeless, traumatised, and with severe injuries. The loss of life grew rapidly and the effects of such loss is felt for years to come. The immediate needs include shelter, food, medical care, clothing, warmth during winter, and trauma counselling. These countries will need the worldwide humanitarian support to rebuild what was lost to this devastating earthquake.
To alleviate ongoing suffering in Syria, we established a branch in 2012 with 2 hospitals, a shelter along the Turkish border, a charity kitchen that serves daily meals, & field workers who regularly service refugee camps. Given that we have the capacity to respond to a disaster of this magnitude, we amplified our ongoing work in Syria and Turkey by expanding our reach to those worst affected. We continue to provide medical care, food, shelter, & emergency relief items to Syrians & the Turkish.
Our dedicated team of highly skilled and diverse medical specialists will continue conducting longer-term medical outreach initiatives both within shelters, camps and at our hospitals. Our hospitals offer lifesaving, world-class healthcare in conditions often unimaginable. The provision of food and shelter will meet an immediate need for families who require the support needed to rebuild themselves.
