In collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH) in El Salvador, BHI launched several new cervical cancer prevention programs that includes HPV screening and the treatment of cervical precancer. The following major accomplishments have been achieved:
1. The technical training of healthcare staff led by BHI: Over 70 El Salvadorian nurses, doctors and ministry of health (MOH) key personnel were trained. The group of trainees were based on the plan for their direct or indirect involvement in the various programs.
2. The rollout of an 3 new HPV screening programs of 6,000 women to demonstrate that HPV testing is both feasible and results in the detection of more high-risk disease.
3. The continuous assessment of the enrollment in these programs. Regular reports are generated allowing for issues to be immediately addressed.
4. Program lessons learned to aid in the scale-up or further improvement of fully incorporated cervical cancer prevention programs as part of the MOH’s routine health services.
5. The development of a fully functional REDCap database that can integrate into the country’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
6. The ability to send out mass texting messages to women in the required demographic to encourage/remind them to get screened for cervical cancer.
