The El Cielo Maya Planetarium promotes the cultural and linguistic identity of the indigenous and non-indigenous communities of the Highlands of Chiapas, recognizing ancient Mayan knowledge such as mathematics and astronomical knowledge with teaching situated in current culture.
The project seeks to train teachers in a methodology adapted to local resources, seeking to benefit students with visits to the planetarium and workshops on Mayan astronomy and mathematics. The expected results are: training for teachers in project methodology, creation of educational materials and project guides for teachers in Spanish and indigenous languages.
In the last month the Planetarium does not have a fixed income or financing, so it has resorted to fundraising through donations. These donations have allowed us to make two visits to the Amado Nervo bilingual primary school in the El Cruise community in the municipality of Chamula. In these visits we worked with fifth and sixth grade, serving a total of 75 students and 19 teachers. There was a screening of the video Stories of the Mayan Sky, and two workshops (Mayan mathematics and basic astronomy).
