Boosting Education to build Resilience in Chiapas

Soberanía hídrica

¡Ya avanza la construcción de baños secos en Bahtzel! Después de los diagnósticos de saneamiento, las personas comenzaron a autoproducir 15 baños secos. Tras realizar un taller sobre composta con los desechos orgánicos y el manejo de la orina para cultivos, los participantes comprendieron que esta ecotecnia disminuye la contaminación del bosque, y reduce los riesgos sanitarios al no estar expuestos a los desechos orgánicos humanos. Tal como lo expresó el participante J.:

Estamos muy contentos de que por fin vamos a iniciar a trabajar por los baños secos, le echaremos muchas ganas y estaremos participando todas y todos durante el proceso, así mismo le digo a mis compañeras y compañeras que nadie afloje la cuerda ya que es para nuestro bienestar de todas y todos, muchas familias ya no irá hacer sus necesidades al monte, ya no contaminaremos más los bosques, el suelo, y aprenderemos a darle mantenimiento y cuidado.

Las mujeres, junto con la naturaleza, son las principales beneficiarias ya que el baño seco disminuye la necesidad de agua por familia y son ellas las encargadas del acarreo de agua para los hogares.

Agroecología y resiliencia

Durante este periodo, las familias de Bahtzel comenzaron los trabajos de construcción del corredor del centro de formación en agroecología, donde se desarrollarán habilidades agrícolas sustentables y se fortalecerá la autonomía y soberanía de la comunidad. Además el centro será un espacio de intercambio entre los saberes tradicionales y el conocimiento científico para generar prácticas sustentables que hagan a las comunidades más resilientes y resistentes ante el cambio climático.

Water Sovereignty

The construction of dry toilets in Bahtzel is now underway! After sanitation assessments, community members began producing 15 dry toilets on their own. Following a workshop on composting organic waste and using urine for crops, participants understood that this eco-technology reduces forest pollution and lowers health risks by preventing exposure to human organic waste. As participant J. expressed:

"We are very happy to finally start working on the dry toilets. We’re putting in a lot of effort, and everyone will be involved in the process. I also tell my companions not to slack off because this is for the well-being of all of us. Many families will no longer have to go to the forest to relieve themselves; we will no longer pollute the forests and soil, and we will learn to maintain and care for them."

Women, along with nature, are the primary beneficiaries since the dry toilets reduce the water needs per family, and they are responsible for hauling water for the households.

Agroecology and Resilience

During this period, families in Bahtzel began building the corridor for the agroecology training center, where sustainable agricultural skills will be developed, and community autonomy and sovereignty will be strengthened. Additionally, the center will serve as a space for the exchange of traditional knowledge and scientific expertise to generate sustainable practices, making the communities more resilient and resistant to climate change.

Fortalecimiento de la soberanía hídrica

En Bahtzel, se realizaron diagnósticos de saneamiento como parte de los esfuerzos para fortalecer la soberanía hídrica. CC evaluó a 22 familias interesadas en autoproducir baños composteros, dado que la mayoría de ellas carecen de un sistema de saneamiento adecuado.

Durante el diagnóstico, se investigó el uso del agua y las fuentes de abastecimiento de las familias. Aunque la mayoría tiene acceso a un pequeño manantial cercano, enfrentan desafíos significativos durante la temporada seca, cuando deben recorrer largas distancias para conseguir agua. Para mitigar esta escasez, las comunidades han implementado Sistemas de Captación de Agua de Lluvia (SCALLS) con el respaldo técnico de CC, permitiéndoles almacenar agua durante varios meses.

Educación y comunalidad en el centro

La comunidad de Bahtzel decidió ampliar el espacio del centro de formación comunitario realizado en 2022 con la técnica del Bajareque, construyendo un corredor. 

El objetivo del centro es tener un espacio comunitario que permita realizar de manera autogestiva las actividades de fortalecimiento de la organización colectiva, agroecología y actividades culturales – religiosas.   

El centro es un importante espacio de reunión y difusión para todas las comunidades aledañas, donde se forma conciencia y se construye comunalidad alrededor de los principios de sustentabilidad, reciprocidad e identidad cultural.

Strengthening water sovereignty

In Bahtzel, sanitation diagnostics were conducted as part of efforts to strengthen water sovereignty. Cooperación Comunitaria together assessed families' water use and sources of supply of 22 families, since most of them lack an adequate sanitation system.

Although most have access to a small spring nearby, they face significant challenges during the dry season, when they must travel long distances to fetch water. To mitigate this shortage, the communities have implemented Rainwater Catchment Systems with technical support from Cooperación Comunitaria, allowing them to store water for several months.

They are now opting to self-produce dry toilets to ensure sanitation, reduce the need for water and produce compost. 

A center to boost Education and Community

The Bahtzel community decided to expand the space of the community training center built in 2022 with local materials. 

The objective of the center is to have a community space that allows to carry out in a self-managed way the activities of strengthening the collective organization, agroecology as well as cultural - religious activities.   

The center is an important meeting and dissemination space for all the surrounding communities, where awareness is formed and the sense of community is built around the principles of sustainability, reciprocity and cultural identity.
