Story of Adil

By debadutta dash | Secretary, Sukarya USA

Adil
Adil

Eleven-year-old Adil is a resident of Hoti Camp, primarily a locality in Southwest Delhi of migrant laborers and marginalized communities who came to Delhi for better subsistence. Adil’s family includes four siblings: his laborer father, a charwoman mother, and invalid grandparents. The family originally hails from Gannour in Uttar Pradesh. Adil was a regular school-going boy before lockdown. He used to attend the government primary school in his locality. He dropped out of school, like many other unfortunate kids of India during lockdown, owing to insufficient resources for online education. During this time, his father, the family's sole breadwinner, lost his regular permanent job at a welding factory and had to take recourse to daily wage-earning labor jobs to sustain his family. Education was a farfetched thing for the children.

Adil wants to study and become a respectable service holder with a good job, which will incur a good salary. He does not want to become a laborer like his father and elder brother. He and his family were worried about him dropping out of School. During this time, the Education On Wheels (EOW) bus of Sukarya started going to Hoti camp as a new location. Teachers of EOW, while conducting surveys on marginalized populations in the area to locate their potential students, interacted with Adil’s family. Adil was immediately enrolled for the session of 2023-2024 for the remedial classes. The entire family was pleased as now Adil can study regularly. He is very interested in getting educated and attends all the courses on the EOW bus regularly with the utmost attention. Adil is thankful to EOW for giving him a second chance to study and open new horizons.
