A journey from dust to the desk

By Debadutta Dash | Secretary, Sukarya USA

Jannat
Jannat

Jannat, a little girl from a Delhi slum pocket, had never imagined being enrolled in Delhi Public School (DPS), but now it’s a reality. She studies in class 6 currently at DPS Vasant Kunj. At the same time, she was sharing the story, her father’s eyes filled with tears. Her father and the entire family are still in disbelief.

She was a kind of child labor and deprived of education. She is the daughter of a rag-picker, and she used to support her father in this work, but she always dreamt of studying. Her father and mother also wanted to ensure studies for her, but due to the poverty and lack of opportunities, it could not happen until Sukarya intervened.

The story of success began with Jannat’s enrolment into the Education on Wheels (EOW) Project of Sukarya, wherein she got opportunities to learn appropriately regularly for a year. Further to it, she got directly mainstreamed with a government school. She gained access to one of the premier public schools of Delhi. There, she came across a scheme of EWS [Economically Weaker Section] quota for admission in public schools. She instantly contacted the EOW team of Sukarya, and the team has further ensured the documental and eligibility procedures.

Now she needs extra tuition classes to match up to public school expectations. She and her father are well determined to take her to the maximum potential to attain academic success to secure a promising future.
