The importance of adapting educational materials

By Karime Madeleine Ccollana Palomino | Project Leader

Teaching material is an essential support to improve the learning of children with disabilities included in the regular education system. Likewise, it guarantees the elimination of educational barriers by creating:

1) Elements that favor and enhance the development of the student.

2) Promote more significant cognitive schemes

3) Stimulates your senses and intelligence.

These adapted and didactic materials generate greater efficiency in accessing information, developing their abilities to achieve the desired competencies. Materials can be developed to activate abstract and logical thinking, oral and written language, imagination and socialization.

Considering that Education in Peru is rote and based on outdated methods, it is really important and fundamental to adapt materials for students with special educational needs.

Special educational needs are the set of pedagogical measures that have the objective of compensating for the difficulties that students present when accessing the study plan (curriculum). Curriculum adaptations are currently being developed for children with disabilities and/or learning problems, creating special resources to deal with barriers in their learning and participation process.

From Wasi Esperanza we see cases like Valentina's, a lovely girl, her diagnosis is muscular atrophy, She is 5 Years old and goes to Kindergarden, the last two years her classes were virtual which was difficult for the family. The education project focused on making and using simple didactic materials that are appropriate to the contents and objectives of the teacher, managing to enhance their capacity for perception, expression, readiness, social skills and integration with the environment.
