Education Support For Child Laborers in Nepal

By Churna Bahadur Chaudhari | Executive Director - Backward Society Education

Success Story 1

Sarita- "I will attend school daily and work hard so that one day I can show everyone that former child laborer can do something for herself if given the opportunity."

Sarita, a former child laborer, is the daughter of Chet and is currently living with her parents in Rapti Sonari Rural Municipality Ward No. 5, Suntepari Village, Banke District. Her parents are low income earners. They have to provide for their three children and meet their basic needs. They live on a 5 khatta (0.04 acres) of land in their small hut. There is not enough land for them to cultivate. They have to take up casual work to supplement their income. Due to poverty, Chet and his wife had to take their 11-year-old daughter to a nearby village, Lalahi Village, to work as a casual laborer. She was forced to work as child caretaker for one year. She had to discontinue her studies after completing grade 5. She did not receive any wages for her work. She got food to eat and minimal clothing.

After her situation was discovered by one of the BASE program field facilitator Ganesh, BASE convinced her parents to free the child from child labor. Ganesh counseled her parents about child labor, that it is the crime. He also counseled them on the importance of education. Sarita was freed and was able to continue with her studies. She enrolled in grade 6 in Shree Samaya Bhawani Adharbhut Bidhalaya Alinagar Village. Her parents are optimistic about being able to continue to provide her with an education. To support her education, Backward Society Education (BASE) provided her with school supplies and uniform.

After receiving the support from BASE, Sarita is very excited and happy to be able to continue with her studies. She said, "I will attend school daily and work hard so that one day I can show everyone that former child laborer can do something for herself if given the opportunity." Sarita is committed to work hard at school and make her parents proud of her. They are grateful to BASE for helping them with Sarita and providing her with the school materials that she needed.

Success Story 2

Nisha and Akrityare two sisters, aged 11 and 9 respectively, and stay alone in their own home in the care of their uncle and aunt in Rapti Sonari Rural Municipality Ward No. 5, Chacharpharka Village, Banke District. Nisha is grade 4 and Akrity in grade 3. They both attend Balak Shanti Adharbhut School Chacharpharka in Banke. They faced a lot of problems after their father died. Before their father’s death, they were attending school and leading normal lives. Their mother married another man after their father’s death and eloped with him. The children became orphans. They had to meet their own basic needs and therefore took up casual work. They would sometimes go to their maternal grandfather’s home to work, sometimes to a neighbor’s home to take care of children and during the rainy season they would work in the rice farms to earn a living.

Though, the children were staying with their uncle and aunt. they could not fulfill all the needs of the two young girls. They too were agricultural laborers and were earning mere income. Their land was also not enough to practice subsistence farming. This is why the children have to look for work. Regardless of their economic situation, they have never faltered on their goal of receiving an education. They never compromised for education.

After knowingly, BASE field staff Mr. Ganesh Kumar convinced the children's uncle that the practice of child labor is the crime and also the importance of education. Now the children's uncle is being positive to provide her education. In support to continue the children's education BASE had provided the stationary materials and school dress dedicating to their parents. After getting the support, the little girls are very cheering and encouraged to continue their school study. The family and the girls did commitment to continue their study for bright future. They gave thankful to the organization- BASE and program that supported to continue their school education.

Nisha and Akrity were also discovered by BASE program field facilitator Ganesh. BASE convinced their uncle and aunt to free them from child labor. Ganesh counseled them about child labor, that it is the crime. He also counseled them on the importance of education. They are optimistic about being able to continue to provide her with an education. To support her education, Backward Society Education (BASE) provided her with school supplies and uniform.
