Resilience and Hope

By Karyn Beckner | Administrative Assistant and Teen Mentor

Our students helping one another to flee the flood
Our students helping one another to flee the flood

After living in Chiang Mai, Thailand for almost ten years, I am still astonished by the resilience of the Thai people. I see it everyday as they work hard to make ends meet; the average daily wage being 363thb/day in 2024 (https://tradingeconomics.com/thailand/minimum-wages).  I saw it during COVID and now most recently, during the devastating flooding in northern Thailand last month.

Besides our center getting about eight inches of water, almost every TawSaeng family was affected by the floods; they lost beds, kitchen cookers, school supplies and uniforms, etc.  If they didn’t have a second floor in their house to move things up to, they lost even more.  We are so thankful that none of the students or families we work with lost their lives or were injured.  But the Thai people don’t give up.  They support one another and help each other recover, and they do it all with smiles on their faces.  Their attitude is that “everything is okay because we are okay and we’re together.”  They still have hope.

We visited with each family to assess their needs and have already made deliveries of groceries and cooking supplies.  Over the next month, we plan to deliver the needed items that each family needs.

Would you like to make a great impact amongst the Thai people affected by the 2024 floods?  We are seeking people to partner with us to provide the much needed items to help them rebuild their lives.  We continue to care for, serve and educate students and families affected by human trafficking, floods, poverty, marginalization, etc.,  Won’t you join us?!
